Follow along with this session on IdeaBoards here!

Agile Edmonton is a User Group run by volunteers with the goal of helping Edmonton develop better software using Agile methods. Unsure what Agile methods are? You’ve come to the right place. Wikipedia defines Agile software development as “a group of software development methodologies based on iterative development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing cross-functional teams.” If that still confuses you, then bring your questions to our next meeting or to our slack channel.

Lean Coffee is a structured, but agenda-less meeting. Participants gather, build an agenda, and begin talking. Conversations are directed and productive because the agenda for the meeting was democratically generated. There are currently dozens of Lean Coffees happening world-wide.

Becoming a Video Star with Alyson Connolly
The move to video for most business meetings has changed the dynamic of how we relate to other people during the workday. In the past, you probably prepared yourself for “in person” presentations in a board room by writing out your pitch, practicing your delivery and wearing clothing suitable for the occasion.
Appearing at a meeting via video is no different in those aspects, but there are some other factors at play as well when technology is involved. Film Screening: Salaam B'y + Discussion on Welcoming Communities Fuelling Inclusive Innovation
Come for a short doc screening and discussion on the connection between communities of kindness incubating innovation and entrepreneurship through the story of Aatif Baskanderi. After the 20-minute film, join Aatif in a fireside chat with fellow Newfoundlander and COO of TEC Edmonton, Bobbi Elliott, and pitch your own questions.

Aatif grew up in a place where not many people looked like him or believed in the same things that he did. As a Muslim child of Pakistani immigrants, Newfoundland became home. His experiences growing up on “the rock” was like something out of a storybook. On this cold, isolated island in the Atlantic ocean, Aatif learned sincerity and appreciation for others that would set him up for remarkable success in life.

As an engineer with a keen interest for social justice, he embarked on a journey to connect the two. Guided by his Muslim & Newfoundlander values, this led him to studying at the London School of Economics, researching Fair Trade farmers in Palestine, working on malaria prevention in Sierra Leone, informing science policy in Canada, the UK & Europe, leading Engineers Without Borders across Canada, leading innovation at multi-national companies and now serving the Edmonton entrepreneur community as the Director of Startup Edmonton.

Salaam B’y had 50+ screenings in 30+ cities globally, official selection at 19 film festivals, nominated for 10 awards, won 5 awards, including Best Documentary at Canadian Diversity Film Festival and one of two Muslim-Canadian films selected for United Nations Global Migration Film Festival. Through this work, Aatif received the Points of Light Award from HM Queen Elizabeth II. Salaam B’y also won the Inspirit Foundation grant for 2019 Creating Communities of Kindness Tour across Canada. The Educator’s Companion Guide and film has been adopted by 200+ teachers across Canada, including partnerships with Toronto District School Board and Newfoundland & Labrador English School District. The film was initially made through crowdfunding $15,000 from 230 donors from 19 countries, as well as a radio documentary that aired nationally on CBC The Sunday Edition.

Customer Economics 101 with Endeavour Advisory
An investor asks you "how do you make money?" Is your response about the way that you get revenue and price your product? Or do you discuss the full economics of finding, closing, and servicing that customer for their forecasted customer lifecycle?

When people ask you about your "LTV/CAC" equation, do you grin and bear it through the conversation, or are you able to talk about the full process above and distill it into an "it costs us $X to get the customer and we make $Y from them over Z timeframe" answer?

All too often, entrepreneurs answer with the former, and we'd like to help you get through the latter. For early-stage companies looking to build a business and raise capital, an investor wants to understand that you know how to take their money and turn it into a business that will scale. The "LTV/CAC" equation is your scaling engine, and investors want to know that you understand and fully appreciate the scaling process.
Let's take an hour to discuss a business' customer economics and help you position yourself to best raise money and build your startup.

Breaking into Data Science - The How's and Why's

Now more than ever, organizations of all sizes — from start-ups to large-scale corporations — are looking at how they can benefit by using machine learning and data science.

However, as your business or organization dives into these areas, you likely have questions. You could be wondering, “how do I start?”, “how do I measure success?”, or, “who do I need to add to my team?”

In this introductory session, the data science team at Cybera will provide you with an overview into data science, talk about how you can apply it in your area of expertise, share resources that you can leverage, and discuss what you may need to start your own data science project. We’ll also share success stories from Alberta organizations currently using data science and provide "real world" examples of how this practice can be applied.

RSVP here to attend.

Founders & Funders
RSVP here to join us on Remo for Founders & Funders!

Join Startup Edmonton, TEC Edmonton, BDC and Alberta Enterprise Corporation as they host Founders & Funders virtually on Remo during the 7th annual Edmonton Startup Week!

Bringing together active investors and tech founders at all stages, Founders & Funders is a chance to connect with a growing community, create connections, and foster relationships before the ask for support is on the table. Often, founders flounder when seeking capital because they put off developing relationships with potential investors thinking that their pitch or product isn’t perfect. Investors, keen to work with the local tech community, are sometimes unsure of where to meet founders outside of formal presentations or networks.

We are excited to kick off the event with a panel featuring three local startups and investment firms that have secured deals & an exit in the last year. The three teams will shed light into their founder-funder relationships, as well as share firsthand how they secured the partnership and how they will work together for their next stage of growth:
  • Arden Tse of Accelerate Fund / Yaletown Partners and Ryan Tucker of G2V Optics
  • Pat Lor of Panache Ventures and Tim Regnier of Smart Access
  • Ha Nguyen of McRock Capital and Remi Schmaltz of Decisive Farming

Panel discussions are moderated by Andrea Drager, Principal at Azure Capital Partners.

Founders & Funders is open to all investors and tech founders with products at all stages. Join in virtually for a lighthearted and informative panel + networking to learn more about the opportunities available in our region and how to best prepare to work together in the future.

Newbies to Code with Birm Wais
A place where code newbies can talk about their journeys, share tips and tricks, and just discuss code in general. This can also be a place for someone who is interested in coding. What happens oftentimes in regular meetups is that the conversations are too advanced for newbies which exacerbates the imposter syndrome the newbie is already feeling from learning to program. I know because this has often been me in many situations. This can be a place where there are no stupid questions and everything is explained with the audience in mind.

How Clio Doubled the Representation of Women in Engineering
In June 2018, Clio was preparing to kick off a big hiring push that would nearly double the size of Clio’s software engineering team in the second half of the year. Hiring that many people in such a short period of time posed both a threat and an opportunity: a threat of further homogenizing their engineering team, which was 87% men at the time, and an opportunity to meaningfully change the makeup of their team for the better. Looking ahead at the next few years of growth, Clio needed to set their engineering team up for success, and a more diverse team would be a higher-performing team. They also knew that their culture was primed, from an inclusion perspective, to welcome a higher number of underrepresented Clions - particularly women. And they strongly believed that they needed to ‘get it right’ now, versus trying to catch up on culture debt or diversity debt later.

Six months later, Clio’s engineering organization was 27% women.

Ainsley’s talk will cover:
  • Why it’s worth it to focus on diversity & inclusion at any stage of growth
  • How to meaningfully change the makeup of a team in a short period of time
  • What to do when you’ve diversified a team to ensure those new hires will be successful

There will be time for Q&A after the presentation.

Light Show In Your Pocket with FKA
Light Show In Your Pocket
A massive video wall blasts mesmerizing patterns over a crowd of hyped-up fans. Perfectly synchronized graphics respond to every nuance. Bass thumps, snare cracks, hi-hats hiss, all alive with the music.

If you're wondering... Is it beat detection? Artificial Intelligence? How can I do that? This is the workshop for you!

Light Show In Your Pocket gives you the foundation to build your own mesmerizing video displays that can run anywhere, even your phone. Having a party this weekend? Is your friend’s band playing a show? Are you decorating a storefront? Creating a piece of public art? Why not create a unique, interactive display that can respond in real-time to sounds and music.

Light Show In Your Pocket is presented in three jam-packed parts:
  • Part 1 - It starts with a presentation about music and how we interact with it visually. A bag of eye candy will be dumped into your eye. We cover dance, light shows, sound design for film, video games, composition, the humble fog machine, and even hallucinations. This lays the groundwork for your visualizer with the visual language of music.
  • Part 2 - We explore the technical side of music visualization. We cover the science of audio signals, computer code, and physics. Breaking music down into its physical essences, distilling it, and demonstrating how these various forces can be combined to control visual properties.
  • Part 3 - We make a visualizer! We’ll start with a raw, working visualizer and pump it up to the max.

Can I do this?

YES!

If you’re a developer, creative coder, web designer, or technical artist, you’ll be right at home. We’ll be coding in React-Three-Fiber. All source code is provided.
But don’t shy away if you’re not technical. If you’re a band, designer, or artist interested in meeting people who create visualizers, please join in. There is a lot to learn!

Let’s work together to create some stunning visual experiences.

See you there!

Amii Presents: Improbotics, an AI Improv Theatre Performance
RSVP now to join!

Improbotics is a tech-infused improvised theatre and comedy show, and a live Turing test-based scientific experiment.

Co-created by robotics researchers Piotr Mirowski (UK/France/Poland) and Kory Mathewson (Canada), as well as drama director Jenny Elfving (Sweden) and science communicator Ben Verhoeven (Belgium), Improbotics combines AI and comedy in a unique way.

The show features A.L.Ex. (the Artificial Language Experiment), the first artificial improvisor which uses advanced natural language processing and machine learning. A.L.Ex. “performs” in the show, becoming one of the troupe as it sends its lines to one of the improvisers via an earpiece. The performer then attempts to physically and emotionally justify AI-generated lines that hopefully make sense. Each performance draws suggestions from the audience, making every show one of a kind.

Improbotics has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Scientist, RTÉ One, Global News Canada and Bloomberg.

Featuring:
  • Kory Matthewson (Ph.D. in Computing Science at Amii/University of Alberta)
  • Piotr Mirowski (Ph.D. in Computing Science at New York University)
  • Rapid Fire Theatre’s top improvisers – Matt Schuurman, Sydney Campbell, Marguerite Lawler, and Julian Faid

Improbotics is presented by Rapid Fire Theatre
